Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
