This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional body horror, but within Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
