Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
