A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
